Summer Opportunity ENGINE

Center for Science and the Schools (CSATs) is offering great opportunity this summer: Research Experience for Teachers (RET) program.  Teachers spend 6 weeks alongside a scientist or engineer for 4 days a week engaging in authentic research practices.  One day a week, the teachers receive professional development from CSATS faculty to help translate the experience back to their classroom.  During the seventh and final week of the program, teachers prepare a technical poster on their summer research to present at the RET symposium at Penn State University, University Park.  The program provides a $5,000 stipend to teachers for participation in the summer and $1,500 stipend for implementation of a classroom research project.

Please see the attached flyer for more information and feel free to contact us directly with any questions.  We have a variety of placements this summer including:

Penn State University Park, PA

  • Architectural Engineering  Research, Cancer Research, Chesapeake Bay Research, Materials Engineering Research

Penn State Harrisburg, PA

  • Architectural Engineering Research

Penn State Cancer Institute, Hershey, PA

Tiffany Lewis, a former CSATS RET fellow, says “My work with CSATS was some of the most enriching professional development I experienced as a teacher because it enabled me to bridge the gap between research and the classroom.  My immersion in the world of research equipped me with the skills to provide my students with a more authentic experience by providing me with the necessary insight to understand the qualities of current practicing scientists in a research laboratory.”
